The Resident Evil soundtrack was released in 2002 on the Roadrunner label to support the launch of the horror film of the same name. The Resident Evil album features music from and inspired by the movie which was itself based on the popular Capcom survival horror video game series.
Contributing artists include Fear Factory, Slipknot, Rammstein, Depeche Mode and most significantly, Marilyn Manson, who provides 5 of the 20 tracks appearing on the album, including the theme track that is most closely associated with the Resident Evil brand: the Resident Evil Main Title.
Marilyn Manson Resident Evil Theme Too Short
Fans of the Marilyn Manson Resident Evil title theme song are often disappointed with the track as it appears on the album. While the soundtrack lists the tune as having a runtime of 2 minutes 12 seconds, the gradual build of the piece, which slowly eases into the industrial refrain familiar to Resident Evil fans, makes the actual runtime feel closer to 60 seconds.
This has been remedied by talented fans of the music of Resident Evil, who have used YouTube as a platform to share their tributes to this atmospheric but woefully short theme song, with longer versions and individual interpretations of the title track.
Resident Evil Theme Music Dark Drum and Bass Mix
YouTube user Milenko33 mixes the original title soundtrack and dialogue from the Resident Evil movie with an energetic drum section. This active grinding beat drives the underlying original forward at a frantic pace, and wouldn't be out of place as the soundtrack to the action sequences in the film. This inspired dark drum and bass version of the Resident Evil theme has a runtime of 4 minutes 49 seconds.
Resident Evil Extinction Theme Song Remix
YouTube user MeatGrind transforms the short Marilyn Manson soundtrack version of the Resident Evil theme into a nine minute epic. Unlike Milenko22's excellent drum and bass interpretation of the theme, MeatGrind stays true to the original. This mix is simply an expertly edited extended version of Manson's main title track.
However, this is definitely a case of more is better. MeatGrind's extended Resident Evil theme song remix gives the listener the time to appreciate the true strength of the industrial center of Marilyn Manson's music: an experience that is lost in the unsatisfyingly short original as it appears on the Resident Evil album.
Other Resident Evil Music on YouTube
The YouTube playlist currently lists over 300 uploaded versions of Marilyn Manson's theme. Musically, many of these mixes leave a lot to be desired. But within that listing, along with such well-crafted remixes as MeatGrind's extended version of the track, and Milenko33's dark drum and bass mix, exist a great many inventive interpretations of the song.
These include Metalmantis1's homemade attempt at the theme on guitar, and Microrator's remarkable version of the Resident Evil title track on piano, which demonstrates what fans of the movie and the music it inspires can do.
